Martin Hultkvist maintains a rare and distinguished dual career at the highest level of Swedish musical life. Trained at the Malmö Academy of Music as both an orchestral musician and a classical singer, he has mastered the art of balancing two demanding worlds: serving as a solo trombonist in the Malmö Opera Orchestra while simultaneously performing as one of the most sought-after tenor soloists on the concert and opera stages.
Hultkvist’s connection to the stage began early. Growing up in a home where classical music was ever-present, he made his debut at the Malmö Opera as a street boy in Carmen in 1984—an experience that ignited a lifelong passion for the theater. A devoted Wagnerian from a young age, he eventually developed a tenor voice of unusual versatility and character. His vocal range allows him to move seamlessly between the lyric repertoire, complex character roles, contemporary works, and the rigors of the Baroque.
As a concert and oratorio soloist, Hultkvist is frequently engaged for his stylistic precision and dramatic presence. He has performed with the Malmö and Helsingborg Symphony Orchestras in a wide-ranging repertoire: from Händel and Mozart, to Stravinsky and Benjamin Britten.
More
Sacred Works: A respected interpreter of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, St John Passion (as Evangelist), Mozart’s Requiem, and Handel’s Messiah.
Modern & Lyric Works: From the wit of Bernstein’s Candide to the technical intimacy of Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
Beyond the concert hall, Hultkvist serves as a vital ambassador for Malmö Opera. He regularly represents the house on tours across southern Sweden, acting as both a presenter and performer in the company’s season previews. His unique background—bridging the gap between the orchestral pit and the soloist’s spotlight—gives him a profound perspective on the mechanics of music-making, making him a truly singular figure in the Swedish cultural landscape.
