Karin Torbjörnsdóttir, a mezzo-soprano of Icelandic and Swedish origin, is celebrated for her versatility across baroque, classical, romantic, and modern repertoire. Her achievements include performances at festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, Anima Mundi Festival in Pisa, 27th International Music Festival Macau, Salzburg’s Nacht der Komponisten and Barocknacht. She was awarded ‘Singer of the Year 2020’ by Gríman, the Icelandic Performing Arts Awards, for her portrayal of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Icelandic Opera.
Karin’s operatic repertoire spans roles by Mozart, Verdi, Rossini, and Puccini, as well as contemporary works by Ligeti, Nono, Rihm, and Ullmann. She trained at Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, completing her Master of Opera with distinction, before joining the opera studio of Staatsoper Stuttgart and later Luzerner Theater.
As a concert soloist, Karin has performed in Austria, Germany, Iceland, Macau, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US, collaborating with conductors such as Sylvain Cambreling, Giuliano Carella, Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason, Johannes Gustavsson, Daníel Bjarnason, Franck Ollu, and Gabriel Venzago. Her debut with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 2021 marked another highlight in her career.
Her recordings include the Dacapo release From Earth to Ether (2023) with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, featuring works by Daníel Bjarnason. Beyond her stage work, she has pursued film acting studies at Prague Film School, appearing in international films and TV series, and working as a production designer on short films.
